Family Lives In a House From the Future – Energy Experiment

After an 18-month experiment in a futuristic house packed with high-tech gadgets and its own powerplant, a Sydney family is looking forward to moving into a century-old weatherboard cottage in the Blue Mountains.

Clare Joyce, Michael Adams and their daughter Ava lived in the Newington home, with the support of utility company Ausgrid and the state government’s climate change fund, to test out dozens of energy-saving devices.

Their every move was monitored by household electronics, from boiling a kettle to driving their plug-in electric car to the shops. The data will be used to help design energy policy.

Keep Track of Your Thermostat Online

From the NYT:

A COUPLE of months ago, a Silicon Valley start-up invited me to review its new home thermostat. I wasn’t expecting much.

If you do go through all the trouble of setting up an ideal schedule, then when the weather or something else in your life changes (say, your cold-fearing relatives from Florida move in for a few weeks), the thermostat won’t adjust to your new circumstances. Then you have to program it all over again — or, more likely, forget about programming it and manually change the temperature a few times a day.

Over the last few weeks, though, I’ve become unreasonably excited over these devices. That’s because I’ve tested several new models that all offer much-needed improvements over the run-of-the-mill thermostats that most of us have on our walls.

Depending on the model, these new devices can accomplish several amazing feats. They connect to the Internet, which means they can be adjusted from afar, using the Web or your phone. The Internet connection also allows them to get information about your local weather and tailor their work accordingly.

Electric Space Heaters Compare and Save

Efficient space heaters allow you to warm specific spaces while keeping your home’s thermostat low.  You can find two types of electric space heaters:

  • Convection models rely on air circulation to distribute heat.
  • Radiant units use infrared radiation to heat objects and people.

The DOE says radiant heaters are more efficient for heating spaces for a short time period, while convection units filled with oil or water – which retain heat and emit warmth even after they’re turned off – are better for heating rooms for extended periods.  Whatever type you choose, look for models with the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) seal, which indicates it has been tested for safety, and opt for models equipped to automatically shut off if overheated or tipped over.
