Install a whole-house fan – A whole house fan is a huge, motorized fan in the attic that cools by circulating air from open windows and doors on lower floors and bring the air up and out. Running a WH fan costs just 1 to 5 cents per hour compared to 20 cents an hour for an AC.

Add ventilation – Not all with older homes have installed exhaust fans in both the bathroom and the kitchen. But this kind of spot ventilation will improve the overall efficiency of a whole-house systems. Make sure you get an energy-star rated star fan and get a professional to install.

Wrap hot-water pipes – especially those within three feet of your water heater. Use polyethylene or neoprene foam insulation eases heat loss and raises water temperature 2 to 4 degrees so you can turn down the heater (for each 10 degrees F reduction you save 3 to 5% in energy costs). Place sleeve seams face-down and secure them every foot or so with acrylic tape, wire or cable ties.
