Asking these questions can help you evaluate an item’s sustainability from raw materials to finish.
- Where did this product come from? Is it from natural sources? Is it recycled?
- What are the byproducts of manufacture? Is the manufacturing low in pollution? Do we distroy something to get this?
- How is the product delivered and installed? Did it travel less than 500 miles? Does installation require additional chemicals or materials?
- How is the material maintained? Is it durable? Can it be repaired? Does it require energy or replacement parts.
- How healthy is the material? Does it outgas chemicals? Can you install it without gloves or a mask? Is it a potential allergen or carcinogen?
- What happens at the end of its life? Is it recyclable or biodegradable? Can it be reused?
