Probably easier than you think. It just takes a little thought in advance, and the patience to set things aside.

With summer holidays looming and figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics already showing householders are increasingly keen on renovations – potentially due to a “batten down the hatches” feeling in the face of the global economic situation, and locally the subdued property market – there’s bound to be a rash of work happening over the break.

Notwithstanding the tradie drought that happens in the those first few weeks post Christmas when everyone is off enjoying their summer break, it’s the perfect time for DIY – rip out those cupboards you don’t like, tear up a few paths, or redecorate the living area.

Carbon Dioxide Emissions Show Record Jump

Latest research on carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels shows they have increased by half in the last 20 years

Carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels have increased by half in the last 20 years, giving the world much less chance of avoiding dangerous climate change, according to new data.

The research was published as lead negotiators were arriving at the UN climate talks in Durban, South Africa, where prospects of a new global treaty on climate change appeared to have stalled, with deep divisions between developed and developing countries.

Last year, emissions from burning fossil fuels rose by 5.9%, bringing the total rise since 1990, the baseline year for calculating emissions under the Kyoto protocol, to 49%, an average rate of increase of about 3.1% a year.

County Won’t Take on SDG&E Over Higher Solar Rates

The county Board of Supervisors on Tuesday refused to oppose a contentious proposal from San Diego Gas & Electric that would result in substantially higher rates for solar users.

The 3-2 vote runs counter to recent actions by a growing slate of local government entities, including cities, public school districts and water authorities that generate their own solar power.
