Free Fluorescent-Light Recycling Kits for Small Business

State Law prohibits throwing away fluorescent bulbs with regular trash because they contain small amounts of mercury. 

Federal grant money allows small businesses in San Diego County to get free “mail-back” recycling kits for disposing of old fluorescent lights.

California to Increase Recycling to 75% by 2020

California is a national leader in waste diversion, which includes reuse, recycling and composting. But residents still dispose of more than 30 million tons of solid waste annually — or roughly 4.5 pounds per person per day. The new target, signed by Gov. Jerry Brown this month, is designed to save landfill space, preserve natural resources and generate “green” jobs.

Can Solar Help the Jobless?

Proposed projects bring hope to Imperial County, which has a 32% unemployment rate.

There are currently 32 proposals for large-scale photovoltaic solar projects, enough to carpet more than 25,000 acres — about 40 square miles — of rural Imperial County, according to Armando Villa, director of Imperial County Planning and Development Services.
