Can Solar Help the Jobless?

Proposed projects bring hope to Imperial County, which has a 32% unemployment rate.

There are currently 32 proposals for large-scale photovoltaic solar projects, enough to carpet more than 25,000 acres — about 40 square miles — of rural Imperial County, according to Armando Villa, director of Imperial County Planning and Development Services.

Where are the Green Jobs?

3,454 new, permanent green jobs were directly created under the federal green-tech program.  The Obama administration had promised that the $38.6 billion loan guarantee program would create or save 65,000 job.  The two-year old effort by the Energy Department, designed to jump-start the nation’s clean technology industry by giving energy companies access to low-cost, government-backed loans, has given out almost half the allocated amount, according to government records.

Where are the Green Jobs? Green Job Conference Next Month

Registration is open for the 3rd annual Bright Green Future Conference on Oct. 21 and 22. The gathering about green jobs and related topics is at the University of San Diego.

This year’s featured theme is energy and national security with presentations such as “Local Perspectives on Energy & National Security” and “Off Fossil Fuels by 2015: Why it’s Imperative for National Security.”

Headliners include State Sen. Christine Kehoe, D-San Diego, and USD Vice President Len Hering.

Topic tracks include green business, green building, zero waste, water and climate change.
