Post Diasaster Tips for When it is Time to Rebuild

So you think you’ve had contractor nightmares. I know I have.

But I guarantee you that ours wither like flowers by the fire compared to what Linda Lipofsky’s been through.

Lipofsky’s home saga involves an act of God, a nefarious contractor, a bankrupt insurance company and lost hope, all followed by absolute good. It’s a tale that will destroy your faith in humanity, then restore it, and teach everyone a lesson.

The story begins in August 2004 when Hurricanes Charley, Frances and Jeanine blew through the Southeast, leaving behind billions of dollars in destruction. The gales destroyed the Orlando home where textbook editor Lipofsky — now a retired 66-year-old — had lived for 20 years, and which she had paid off years earlier.

Shortly after the hurricanes, Lipofsky, like millions of others, tried to find a contractor to repair her roof, which had partially blown off and was leaking badly.

Use High Gloss Paint to Create More Light In Room

DESIGN SAVVY: A great interview with architect and designer David Easton from Elle Decor

High gloss is the most reflective and “blingy” paint finish there is. Because it is the most durable and cleanable, it is a great choice for molding and trim. It is also mildew resistant, making it a good finish for kitchens and bathrooms. I am a big fan of using high gloss in dining rooms because the high sheen creates an elegant sense of depth and drama, reflecting light all around the room.

In a design sense, high gloss walls are not for the uncertain or squeamish. They involve considerably more labor and skill than other paint finishes in order to get the paint streak free. Also the walls must be perfectly smooth, seamless and flawless, so wall repairs and resurfacing are likely to need to be done before painting. High gloss paint is unforgiving so it should be done by specialists.  However, the result is well worth the extra expense and efforts- the glossy walls exude drama, boldness and confidence. I absolutely love high gloss, and treasure any client who is willing to go for it in a design scheme.”

The Biggest Kitchen Design Mistakes

Don’t: Be boring. “The best kitchens have a soul or a spirit that’s warm, inviting, and personal,” designer Mick De Giulio says. “Every project is a chance to do something new and creative. It’s not just about the cabinets and countertops the whole room has to sing.” Adhering to that principle, he updated an Illinois kitchen in an old barn by keeping the architecture of the horse stalls, adding a tongue-in-cheek stovepipe to the range, and installing a pot rack that resemble a wagon wheel.
