Sofa’s style sets a room’s mood; how to buy

Selecting a sofa?

Answer these questions to figure out what sofa style best suits you.

1. How do you like your back?

a. Tufted or generously padded

b. Tight and fitted

c. Loose pillows

2. How do you like your legs?

a. Skirted or carved

b. Straight or tapered

c. Bun feet

3. How do you like your arms?

a. Rounded

b. Square or barely there

c. Super stuffed

4. What best describes your personal style?

a. I like classic, tailored, timeless appeal.

b. The leaner, cleaner and more minimal the look, the better it is.

c. Comfort rules. I’d rather wear old jeans and a soft sweater than anything else.

Conclusions

If you chose all or mostly a’s, you’re a classic. Your style leans toward timeless traditional.

If you chose a’s and b’s, you’re transitional, and feel at home with a mix of old and new.

If you chose mostly b’s, you veer toward modern looks, a tighter, cleaner, less fussy interior.

A lot of c’s indicates you like a casual cottage style, one that says relax, put your feet up and call the dog to curl up beside you.

Want to live on top of a volcano? Its for sale

volcano

The Volcano House will do instead. Privately (or is that desolately?) situated on 60 acres of Mojave Desert, this Midcentury/Star Trekkian abode lists for $650K–a fraction of the rumored $4.2M the Flintstone House commands.  The property  at 50451 Silver Valley Road is a saucer-shaped, 2,206-square-foot home perched, “on top of a 150-foot cinder cone, offer[ing] rare architectural elements paired with unique 360 degree views.” Said views include horizontal desert topography, surrounding mountains and personal lake.

History

If the house seems a little bit show business, it is. It was once owned by Huell Howser, the late producer and host of the TV show “California’s Gold.” Built in 1970, it captures a late ’60s modern aesthetic in a completely unique way–and apparently has kept that aesthetic through the decades, even in its furnishings.

Features

Aside from the striking facade and elevated situation, the Volcano House offers two bedrooms, two bathrooms, wrap-around observation decks and a separate two-story structure at its base, complete with oversized garage and upstairs apartment. The location, which seems like the middle of nowhere, is actually 45 minutes east of Barstow. Sotheby’s International has the listing.

San Diego: Test Drive a plug-in car for free tomorrow

car

What is it like to live with a plug-in car? A promotional event for electric vehicles in San Diego on Saturday will offer a close-up look and discussions of the latest in green car technology, including a test drive of new models.

California plug-in car sales surpassed 100,000 in August, as state and federal authorities encourage drivers to reduce their dependence on gasoline and diesel fuel.

Major car makers have expanded their offerings to more than 15 plug-in models since the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt debuted in 2010.

Experts from San Diego Gas & Electric will be on hand at the event to answer questions about the economics of vehicle charging and discount rates for late-night charging. And a variety of charging stations and equipment will be on display.

The Center for Sustainable Energy, administrator of California’s clean-car rebates, will provide up-to-date information about government incentives.

State rebates of up to $2,500 are available toward the purchase or lease of plug-in vehicles. A federal tax credit can offset another $7,500 in costs.

Organizers of the event expect the following vehicles will be available to test drive:

  • BMW i3
  • Chevy Spark EV, Volt
  • Ecocentre M Car, Van, Truck
  • Fiat 500e, 500e Sport
  • Ford C-Max Energi, Focus EV, Fusion Energi
  • Mitsubishi i-MiEV
  • Nissan LEAF
  • MY14 smart fortwo electric drive cabriolet, electric drive coupe

The Cadillac ELR and Tesla Model S will be on display, though not available to drive.
