The Water Authority is offering a free step-by-step guide that offers do-it-yourself instructions for homeowners who want to convert their landscapes into more water-efficient ones.

The guide reflects the state’s Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance standards and explains the principles of a WaterSmart landscape — water-efficient Design and Irrigation, climate-appropriate Plants, and best Maintenance practices (DIPM).

The benefits of a water-efficient landscape – enhancing property appearance, reducing maintenance, minimizing water pollution due to runoff, and conserving water – are well worth the effort! This guide is the perfect tool for do-it-yourself homeowners who want to ensure their lush and beautiful landscapes stand the test of time in San Diego County’s Mediterranean climate. OB/GYN’s Solar Suitcase Saves Lives in Poor Nations – Cool Thing

Dr. Stachel saw midwives delivering babies by kerosene lantern. She observed a cesarean section during which the lights went out, forcing the surgeons to finish using her flashlight. She watched as a woman who arrived with a uterine rupture and barely a pulse was told to find a clinic with power.

“I was seeing the sickest patients I’d ever seen in rooms not as well equipped as an American garage,” she said. “I would be there at night and think, ‘I’m just here to watch these women die.’ ”

Without reliable electricity and standard tools, “(hospital workers) couldn’t do the job they were trained to do,” she said.

So instead of giving medical advice, she decided to get them more reliable power. As it happened, she knew whom to ask. Her husband, Hal Aronson, has spent more than a decade teaching about renewable energy systems throughout California.

San Diego Partners up on Electric Car-Sharing Program

San Diegans will have a new option of transportation in the near future now that the city has agreed to partner in the nation’s first all-electric car sharing program.

Car2Go will make available 300 two-seater Smart Fortwo cars at various reserved parking spaces in the downtown area of the city.
