Green Property Spotlight – Earthships

Earthships are structures made of mud and reused materials such as old tires, bottles and tiles.

The thick earth walls provide insulation and many include solar panels or other renewable energy sources.

It is reported that they are “surprisingly cozy and even beautiful inside, with ornate detailing and high degree of customization and expansibility”.

This is a green property and when it is time to sell, get insurance or you just want to know its value,  contact the appraisers at www.socalappraisalserv.com ; they specialize in green properties.

How do I buy green products?

Asking these questions can help you evaluate an item’s sustainability from raw materials to finish.

  1. Where did this product come from?  Is it from natural sources?  Is it recycled?
  2. What are the byproducts of manufacture?  Is the manufacturing low in pollution?  Do we distroy something to get this?
  3. How is the product delivered and installed?  Did it travel less than 500 miles?  Does installation require additional chemicals or materials?
  4. How is the material maintained?  Is it durable?  Can it be repaired?  Does it require energy or replacement parts.
  5. How healthy is the material?  Does it outgas chemicals?  Can you install it without gloves or a mask?  Is it a potential allergen or carcinogen?
  6. What happens at the end of its life?  Is it recyclable or biodegradable?  Can it be reused?
