By most accounts, this recent wave of plug-in electric cars has been a resounding success. Dealers sell them quickly and report high customer satisfaction, while utilities say they’re getting frequent requests for information about how to get chargers and what rate to sign up for.

How One Man’s Green Home Conquered San Diego Blackout – Property Spotlight

Green Hero Bruce Haupt estimates he has invested about $230,000 on clean energy improvements for his home.

When a blackout swept across San Diego County last month, Bruce Haupt was more than ready.  Over the years, the retired electronics technician and emergency radio operator has transformed a modest Mira Mesa home into a model of energy efficiency that produces its own solar and geothermal power.

During the blackout, Haupt used his own solar-generated electricity to power home radio equipment and help county authorities assess the extent of the outage.
