3D Print your next holiday cabin

pod

Architecture firm SOM have unveiled designs for a 3D printed pod that shares power with a 3D printed vehicle.

It’s designed to be totally self-sustaining and portable so you can live off the grid anywhere.

The firm, also known as Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, have described their work as “the world’s largest 3D-printed structure”, with the pod 11.6 metres long and 3.7 metres high.

The pod can be transported and assembled anywhere.

The pods solar paneled roof allows it to operate on clean energy day and night.

But if sunlight isn’t available, the pod and the vehicle can share energy wirelessly via a closed loop battery system.

SOM worked in conjunction with the US Department of Energy to develop the technology for the vehicle and battery.

2017 Robot folds your laundry for you

fold

Laundroid, the world’s first laundry-folding robot showcased at CES, 2016. Standing tall (roughly the size of a standard refrigerator), the machine has a pull-out drawer at the bottom to throw your crumpled clothes in. Then image-recognition algorithms identify what kind of clothing it’s handling as each item is moved up to shelves and folded appropriately.

This innovation, which has been in the works for 10 years, has announced the plan to showcase a working model ready by CES, 2017. The company has hopes of securing a deal with Panasonic in which the Laundroid will be included in Panasonic washers and dryers by 2018.

Portable, Enviromentally friendly Ecocapsule

ecocapsuleA Slovakian architecture firm has started selling environmentally-friendly pod homes for a fraction of the cost of most Aussie real estate.

Prices for the micro-homes, called Ecocapsules, start at €79,900 ($121,000 Aus)  ($86,000 USA dollars) and they can be shipped to Australia for €1,900.

The self-sustainable pods, created by Nice Architects, rely on solar and wind power as well as rainwater collection.

They can be taken almost anywhere on the globe, meaning the luxuries of a hotel room are now available in the wilderness.

Or alternatively they could be used as a backyard granny flat, though it is unclear when Australian councils would land on the matter.
