Hurricane-proof buildings made from plastic

Hyman’s here with his surfing mate Ken McBryde, a Sydney architect, to hand over 14 specially-designed category-five-cyclone-proof buildings.

The Nev Houses, made out of recycled plastic, will go to 12 tribes on the island.

“They’re the happiest people on the planet and we want to protect them from cyclones,” Hyman told AAP.

McBryde has studied indigenous housing for years, especially Aboriginal tin camps in NSW.

“The key thing about the design, apart from being cyclone resistant, is that it has been carefully designed to connect nicely with village life, and it’s designed for the tropics,” he told AAP.

The verandah keeps the hot sun and driving rain off the walls and allows the windows to let the breeze through.

The buildings, which can be erected in five days, also have solar power.

When the next cyclone rolls in, the buildings in this project’s first phase will be able to protect 1000 people.

Tips for decorating a nursery

Decorating Your Nursery: Keeping It Practical, Stylish And Baby-Friendly

What are some of the first things you should consider when planning a nursery?

“I think it’s nice to start with a vague look and feel you’re after (create yourself a mood board of sorts on Pinterest) but without getting too rigid about a theme or colour scheme,” Francis told The Huffington Post Australia.

“If I’m honest, I think most mums design nurseries for themselves rather than their babies, who are too young to care anyway! And I really don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. Planning the nursery is a huge part of getting prepared for and excited about your baby’s arrival, practically and psychologically.”

What should a good nursery have?

“It should be somewhere both mum and dad and the baby will enjoy spending time, have heaps of storage and all the practical things like somewhere to change nappies, dispose of nappies, put clothes and all the other things that come with babies out of reach of babies, who start crawling and walking before you know it!

“It also needs to be safe, so some considerations there would be making sure there’s adequate ventilation around the cot, that nothing is hanging precariously on the wall over a cot, that there aren’t loads of cushions and toys in a cot which could present a suffocation hazard, etc.”

Fed keeps interest rate unchanged

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve kept a key interest rate unchanged Wednesday against the backdrop of a slowdown in U.S. and global growth and provided no hint of when its next rate hike may occur.

In a statement after its latest policy meeting, the Fed noted that the United States is enjoying solid job gains but also that “economic activity appears to have slowed.”

The Fed said that such key areas as consumer spending, business investment and exports have weakened. At the same time, it expressed less alarm about global economic conditions than it had after its previous meeting in March.

In March, the Fed had cautioned that global developments “pose risks.” In Wednesday’s statement, it no longer mentioned such risks, though it said it would “closely monitor” global economic and financial developments.

The Fed repeated that it expects inflation to move toward its 2 percent target from persistently low levels as temporary factors, like sharply lower energy prices, fade.
